Mike, I think the gesture is a little confused/unclear. Either he's cocking his head back/sitting upright, or he's leaning forward eagerly. Also, I'd recommend using a harder edged/textural brush.

crow update
Kay so here's my progress so far on this crow character guy... I changed his posed and everything and just putting it up here to make sure that it's on the right track...

Keep things a bit more graphic in the character, but then you can do a lot more gradient stuff in the BG. Blogger made the colors a bit more purple than I painted, but I think the general idea is still there.
